SHA-224 Hash Calculator
SHA-224 produces a 224-bit (28-byte) hash value, displayed as 56 hexadecimal characters.
What is SHA-224?
SHA-224 is a cryptographic hash function in the SHA-2 family. It converts input data into a fixed-length 224-bit hash, regardless of the input length. SHA-224 uses the same compression algorithm as SHA-256, but different initial values and a shorter output.
This calculator encodes input text as UTF-8 and calculates the hash locally in your browser, without sending the text to a hashing server.
How long is a SHA-224 hash?
A SHA-224 hash is always 224 bits (28 bytes) long. In hexadecimal notation, it contains 56 characters. Changing even one character of the input normally produces a very different hash.
SHA-224 vs SHA-256
Both algorithms belong to the SHA-2 family and process data in 512-bit blocks. SHA-224 returns 56 hexadecimal characters, while SHA-256 returns 64. SHA-224 provides approximately 112-bit collision resistance, compared with 128 bits for SHA-256. For new applications, SHA-256 is generally the better default.

Frequently asked questions
Can SHA-224 be reversed?
No. SHA-224 is a one-way hash function, not encryption. The original input cannot be directly recovered from its hash. Short or predictable inputs may still be guessed.
Is SHA-224 secure?
SHA-224 has no known practical collision attacks against the full algorithm. However, SHA-256 offers a larger security margin and is usually preferred for new applications.
Should I use SHA-224 for passwords?
No. SHA-224 is a fast hash function and should not be used alone for password storage. Use a dedicated password-hashing algorithm such as Argon2id, scrypt, or bcrypt.
Does this calculator upload my text?
No. The SHA-224 calculation runs in JavaScript in your browser. The text entered in the calculator is not submitted to a hashing server.
